Start reading to figure out which web host suits you the best...
As you are on this page, you must be looking for good and reliable web hosting, which can host or store your website’s all the configuration files. To select a good web host sometimes become cumbersome as all the companies provide similar services in order to compete with each other. So, I have tried to make a list of some of the best web hosts, for which you will not regret for. So, what do you think, must be in a good web host, besides affordable pricing. Yeah, it should have a variety of features like speed, data transfer, up time, email accounts, technical support, etc. You will see many companies on the internet who promise to give unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space and other features at such a lower price than normal ones. But, those are just cheating you. Don’t be swayed away by their words as they can’t give you such exciting features at such a lower price.
Basically there are many kinds of plans available for hosting. But, if you are looking to start a new website, then you need to opt for shared hosting. There are other hosting plans like cloud hosting, colocation, etc. But, the paid hosting plans for which one would normally go are -
This is the most common type of hosting. This is what with one can starts his / her website. This is the cheapest one (as compared to other paid plans). In this, your website would be hosted with many other websites on a single server. It is not possible to tell, how many websites will be hosted with yours, as this purely depends upon the web-host and their server’s capability. If their servers are powerful enough, they may host many websites on a single server. There are restrictions on such plans as they can hold a certain traffic per account.
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. So, now if your website is receiving a certain amount of traffic, you may think to switch to this plan. In VPS, a dedicated server is shared by multiple users. Here, the server’s resources (CPU and RAM) are divided to each user on a percentage basis. So, if your website receives a certain increase in traffic (for sometime in a day), VPS may not be good to hold that traffic. Hence, you may need to think of some alternative to meet the current traffic needs.
A dedicated server is a physical server provided to you. You are the sole user of the server. So, no doubt this server will be able to hold your traffic as you can install multiple dedicated servers, if you want. But, this kind of hosting is the most expensive one among the others. This would cost you more than $150 per month.
WordPress works best on Linux hosting plans.
Here are some sites from where you may like to buy hosting.
Bluehost is what is recommended by WordPress. They are best for starters and so did I. Their live chat is also good. But, there can be one problem, if your site grows then you can’t change your plan as they only provide shared hosting and reseller (in which you can manage you hosting yourself). So, you will need to see an alternative. They offer Anytime Money Back guarantee. You can sign up for them as low as $4.95 (if you’ll pay 3 years)
Hostgator is the another best option, which provides shared, VPS, dedicated and reseller hosting. Their tag line also suits them – “We eat up the competition”. This blog is hosted on Hostgator itself and I found their chat excellent. I would recommend them. You will rarely find any review against them, now a days. They also offer free domain transfer along with free database, free file transfers.
Dreamhost is another good option. You get all the features required. Plus, any time you can move to their cloud services also. So, it’s a complete package. Once, you signed up with them, you don’t need to worry for any problem. You can start from $8.95. FYI, India’s most popular tech blog labnol.org is also hosted on this host.
Godaddy is reliable and the positive thing is that they offer plans in many currencies. So, you can pay in your own currency and this will really reduce the cost, you are paying. The currencies they support include US Dollar, Australian Dollar, Brazilian Real, British Pound, Indian Rupee, Chinese Renminbi Yuan, Euro, Japanese Yen, Mexican Peso, Swiss Franc and Canadian Dollar. So, they are affordable but the bad thing is they don’t have live chat support, which makes the people doubtful to buy from them or not. But, yes, regarding domain name registration, godaddy is the daddy of everyone, as they are world’s largest registrar.
This hosting is for small business or individuals. If you are looking to buy VPS plans, then you can go for it.
Though, for every company, you will find positive as well as negative reviews. But, you need to see the ratio. How much people, who actually tried that particular hosting, are recommending that. So, watch that closely before buying.
Please don’t go for free hosting, if you are serious for your online venture or business. There are many free services out there for creating and sharing your articles like bloggers, wordpress.com, tumblr, squidoo, hubpages. But, the one, I would recommend is bloggers as you can monetize this site with Google Adsense also from almost start and can earn money.
There is another option for you to go for a custom domain and free web hosting. But this also doesn’t fit quite well. Free web hostings are not reliable and they doesn’t guarantee any up-time.
I myself had a bad experience with one of the hosting company. Though they provided free hosting. Back in start of 2012, I wanted to start my blog and looked for custom domain but free hosting. So, I liked the features of one of the company (I don’t want to reveal their name) very much. They were providing everything you will look for in an ideal web host and all that absolutely free of cost. So, I bought my domain name (from a different registrar) and accepted them as my hosting provider. But, I was amazed when this dreadful thing happened. They suspended my account exactly 34 days after I made the account (On my request, they used to unsuspend the same). According to them, my website was consuming too much server resources. I was getting around 1000 visitors a day at that time. My website experienced suspension many times and database connections errors were too frequent at such a low traffic. Besides this, my website also experienced down times also (it still managed to attract traffic, during its up time). Then, the day came when they completely suspended my account and I was forced to switch my account to another web host (their sister site), which was a paid one. I paid for the hosting there. But, still the same things happened again. Somehow, I managed to change my hosting provider again and this time, bluehost was waiting for me.
So, I would rather suggest you to go by the ones listed here. There may be other hosting companies, which are regional and may be good enough. These are the ones, which are international and have been in this field from quite a long time. These were my thoughts. Kindly share yours in the comments section below.
